The VA Southern Nevada Healthcare System (VASNHS), Las Vegas Nevada, is searching for well qualified Ear, Nose, Throat (ENT) Otolaryngologist, Head and Neck Surgeon, to join our Surgical Care Line team, reporting to the Chief of Surgery.  Per the American Academy of Otolaryngology of Head and Neck Surgery, otolaryngology physicians are trained in the medical and surgical management and treatment of patients with diseases and disorders of the ear, nose, throat (ENT) and related structures of the head and neck. Otolaryngologists diagnose and manage diseases of the ears, nose, sinuses, larynx, mouth and throat as well as structures of the neck and face. Competence in the in-tumor surgery is required. Otolaryngology Surgery has been prominent in the development of innovative techniques in head and neck surgery. The foundation of surgical anatomy, physiology, pathology, and other basic sciences is fundamental to this specialty. Competency in otolaryngology surgery implies a special combination of basic knowledge, surgical judgment, technical expertise, ethics, and interpersonal skills to achieve satisfactory patient relationships and problem resolution.

Services are available to more than 240,000 Veterans living in our catchment area.  Within the sunny Las Vegas valley and surrounding areas, VA Southern Nevada Healthcare System (VASNHS) provides outpatient and inpatient health care services to more than 45,000 patients yearly, exceeding 450,000 outpatient visits per year.  This comprehensive VA Medical Center is a 90-bed inpatient facility with state-of-the-art medical, diagnostic and surgical services.  Other services provided by VASNHS include a 20-bed inpatient psychiatric treatment ward that opened on April 15, 2013.  Several outpatient services are available at the Medical Center.  Services provided by VASNHS continue to expand to meet the demands of the dynamic growth.

Salary will be determined by Compensation Review Panel process with approval by Medical Center Director based on selected candidate's credentials, experience and other qualifications, with realistic range of Compensation to be $280,000 - $320,000 Annually (Max Range: $400,000.00)

Duties include, but are not limited to:

• Leadership in the application of Evidence-Based Medicine to in-patient and outpatient client care, organizational processes and/or systems, improving outcomes at service level.
• Knowledge to implement an educational plan to meet changing program or service needs for self and others.
• Knowledge of current techniques, trends, and professional issues related to ENT care and performance measures related to ENT.
• Knowledge of the range of administrative laws, policies, regulations, and precedents applicable to the administration of ENT care.
• Knowledge of Quality Improvement tools in data collection and identifies barriers to the achievement of quality improvement in ENT care.
• Knowledge relevant to the principles, practices and techniques associated with Performance Improvement, healthcare-related issues, and other clinical professions.
• Ability to retrieve, collect and analyze data to identify patterns and/or trends, and ways to modify and/or improve care practices to facilitate accomplishment of quality patient care.
• Knowledge of the Computerized Patient Medical Record. Ability to analyze and evaluate the clinical contents of medical records and associated documents, in terms of the quality and appropriateness of clinical care issues, such as adherence to, or deviation from accepted referral/consultation guidelines, standards and/or procedures.
• Thorough understanding of long-range objectives and the orderly and logical progression of steps to achieve those objectives.
• Knowledge of current techniques, trends, and professional issues related to ENT care.
• May perform at a minimum 90% of his/her time in a clinical role 10% in administrative and educational role.
• Expected to function as a cooperative and collegial team member with the entire general surgery division. This means that each individual surgeon should expect to take a proportional amount of call. Should be prepared to cover other attending's patients when "on call" as well as to be able to delegate responsibility to colleagues when "off call"
• Participates in the development, implementation and maintenance of a systematic assessment of clinical, administrative and research practices in support of ENT care.
• Reviews medical charts of patients identified Peer Review; discuss cases/medical charts with physicians when needed/required.
• Analyzes and evaluates the clinical contents of medical records and associated documents, in terms of the quality and appropriateness of clinical care issues, such as adherence to, or deviation from accepted referral/consultation guidelines, standards and/or procedures.
• Makes determinations of medical necessity and documents approval or denial of referral/consultation requests for ENT care with supporting data and rationale in the electronic medical record.

Requirements & Expectations:

• Board Certified in Otolaryngology
• Proficiency in spoken and written English
• Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia
• Citizenship of the United States. Noncitizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with Department of Veterans Affairs policy
